MARSHALL, Mich. â Michigan State Police are telling people to report suspicious activity as thefts of catalytic converters are on the rise in West Michigan.
Police say a catalytic converter, a stereo, and saws were stolen from a vehicle parked at Columbia Avenue and I-94 in Battle Creek between February 18 and February 22, 2021.

Catalytic converter theft suspect arrested after police see him crawl under car at 2 a.m. in Park-N-Ride lot

ALBION, MI – A man attempting to cut off and steal a catalytic converter from a car in a Park-N-ride lot near Albion was arrested when police caught him mid-theft.
At 2:18 a.m. Sunday, May 9, a deputy saw a suspicious vehicle near the Park-N-Ride on C Drive North near Albion and kept an eye on it, monitoring what the driver was doing, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy then watched the driver, a 43-year-old Big Rapids man, crawl under a parked vehicle at the park and ride lot, prompting the deputy to approach him and ask what he was doing, police said.
ALBION, MI (WKZO AM/FM) Â Calhoun County police caught a catalytic converter thief in the act early Sunday morning, May 9th.
It happened when a sheriffâs deputy found a suspicious vehicle near the Park-N-Ride on C Drive North near Albion around 2:20 a.m.
The deputy observed the suspect, a 43-year-old male from Big Rapids, exiting his vehicle and getting under another one. The deputy approached the suspect who was attempting to cut off the converter from the other vehicle.
The suspect confessed to the crime and is believed by police to have been working the I-94 and I-69 corridor.

SPRINGFIELD, Mich. â Deputies responded to a hit-and-run incident at a Springfield intersection yesterday morning, according to the Calhoun County Sheriffâs Office.
Weâre told it happened on Harmonia Road and Helmer Road.
Authorities say a white male driver fled the area before deputies arrived, adding his truck was determined to be stolen out of Charlotte, Mich.
