Gastonia Police host outreach event for Hispanic population

Gastonia Police host outreach event for Hispanic population The third largest racial demographic in Gastonia consists of folks of Hispanic or Latino origin. Combined they make up a bloc of thousands of people spanning multiple generations and despite their prevalence, they have not always had the best relationship with members of law enforcement. That is something that the Gastonia Police Department is looking to address and change. And the first steps were lively ones. On Saturday members of the Gastonia Police Department hosted a get-together with members of the city s Latinx community. The event, held at Rotary Pavilion, allowed community members to meet with Spanish-speaking members of the police departments in Gastonia and Charlotte. This year s YMCA Pledge 2 Plunge: warmer, safer, and warmer

It s warmer. It s safer. And it s warmer. Uh, Michelle. That s only two reasons. No, she answers. It s three. Warmer. Safer. And Warmer. For those unfamiliar, Pledge 2 Plunge is the Y s biggest fund-raising event of the year. Teams representing businesses and community organizations raise money through pledges for the pleasure of leaping off the Y dock and plunging into the chilly waters of Robinwood Lake. And, by all accounts, those waters are indeed chilly, but they ll likely be at least a little warmer on the last Saturday in April than they would have been on the first Saturday in March. We had considered doing a virtual event, said Christa Heilig, chairwoman of the Y s board of directors. But the fun comes from seeing people actually dive into that water and watching them come back out.
