Picturesque Offaly village reverses decline and will continue to fight back

NEWS that an Offaly village will be among the recipients of the 2021 Town and Village Renewal Scheme announced recently has been welcomed by Martin Buckley, Chairperson of The Development Association, a body which represents thirteen local groups throughout the area.
Members of the Pullough Development Association, who have been working hard behind the scenes by identifying needs and solutions as well as submitting applications, are delighted that Pullough has been recognised and rewarded and look forward to been consulted when the process starts.
The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is a Government rural initiative and is part of a package of national and local support measures to rejuvenate rural towns and villages throughout Ireland funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and administered by the Local Authorities, including Offaly County Council.
The level of poverty and deprivation within the New Ross district has increased by 40 per cent in the past six months, according to a Wexford Local Development (WLD) spokesperson.
Giving a general outline of the positive work WLD does within the community, WLD CEO Brian Kehoe said the organisation is working with people suffering from extreme deprivation.
WLD is funded to the tune of €6.4m annually, 40 per cent of which comes from the Department of Social Protection,
He said the Leader programme was extended until the end of March. We are due to begin a transit program on April 1. We support individuals in certain marginalised groups and business through our back to work enterprise scheme and Leader.

Mid Ulster District Council’s Planning Committee has given the green light to the remaining phase of the £1M scheme to enhance leisure facilities at Maghera Leisure Centre, with proposed floodlighting at the site’s new 3G pitch now approved.
The scheme is part of an overall £5.2M investment in leisure and outdoor recreation facilities across the district by the Council.
Work continues at the site to complete the underlying ground works for the new 3G pitch before the specialist surface is laid.
Frustration in Offaly village with unfinished work with no real end in sight

According to one local councillor, an element of frustration is being felt within the local community in Kinnitty where people were being left dealing with cones and barriers since last June after works, under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme stalled due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Speaking at the recent monthly meeting of Birr Municipal District, Cllr John Clendennen raised the issue with council officials.
“We thought we had learnt from the first town and village renewal project. We seem to be making the same mistakes again where accesses are being blocked.
Projects in four villages in the county are to get funding under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, it was announced last week.
Carlingford has been approved for €100,000 repair of the medieval boundary wall at Carlingford Heritage Centre and refurbishment of the public toilets, while a similar sum has been allocated to Blackrock for improvements to footpaths along Rock Road and addition of a looped walkway. Likewise Dromiskin has received €100,00 for the development of a looped footpath with associated works and lighting.
In the south of the county, Stabannon has received €76,050 for the provision of footpaths and lighting in the village.
