Two weeks before Gov. Henry McMaster made wearing masks in schools optional, top officials from South Carolina s Department of Health and Environment Control were very concerned about the risk and wanted McMaster to delay the lifting of mask requirements until fall, according to emails obtained by The Greenville News through a Freedom of Information Act request. We saw that the Governor made remarks today saying he is opposed to children wearing masks in schools, DHEC Director Edward Simmers said in an April 28 email to the Governor s Office. From a health and safety standpoint, our very strong recommendation is that children should continue to wear masks in school until the end of this school year.

Gov. Henry McMaster has asked the state Department of Health and Environmental Control to not go door-to-door to increase vaccination rates despite a federal initiative to do so.
McMaster said in a letter to DHEC that taking the vaccine is a personal choice for South Carolinians and that information about the vaccine and access to the vaccine has been provided to the public.
He added that the initiative from President Joe Biden s administration for door-to-door outreach was bad policy. The prospect of government vaccination teams showing up unannounced or unrequested at the door of targeted homeowners or on their property will further deteriorate the public’s trust and could lead to potentially disastrous public safety consequences, McMaster said in his letter.
