When the last school bell rings on June 4, students in Greenville County Schools will step outside to embrace the academic reprieve that summer brings.
But for thousands of students, that break will only last for a few days.
After a year unlike any other, the district is planning for a summer school unlike any in recent years. Greenville County Schools, South Carolina s largest school district, is recommending summer school to 9,747 students, a number that could change by the time final grades are filed on June 4.
In a district of about 74,000 students, more than 10% have been invited to the summer program to catch up on missed content and recover failing grades. Some students will start attending as early as June 7, while others will start weeks later and end as late as July 22.

When Stephanie Hollis logged into her account with Greenville County Schools, she noticed her graduating senior still had about $35 in unused lunch money.
She saw a button that allowed her to transfer the money to a sibling s account, but since neither of her other children eat lunch at school, she had another idea why not donate it? When they have negative lunch balances, they get different lunches. And that s just not what a kid should have to worry about, Hollis said. So if we could give the $35.50 to somebody to make them a little less anxious and [have] a little less negative of an experience? That s easy.
