Alabama transgender youth bill heads to House floor for vote

A bill that would ban puberty-blocking drugs and hormones to any youth younger than age 19 and subject doctors to criminal penalties is one step closer to becoming law after the Alabama House Health Committee voted in favor of the bill during a Wednesday morning. The committee approved the bill, sponsored by Sen. Shay Shelnutt, R-Trussville on a voice vote. The bill was amended to prevent pharmacists from facing penalties, but would put physicians who prescribe the drugs at risk of a 1-to 10 year prison sentence. The bill drew criticism from some members of the committee, including Rep. Neil Rafferty, D-Birmingham and Rep. Joe Lovvorn, R-Auburn. Both took issue with the certain criminalization aspects of the bill and with removing options for parents who seek out guidance from trained professionals.
