The number of coronavirus-related deaths continues to rise on Staten Island, with two additional fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data from the city Health Department. A total of 1,463 borough residents have died since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those deaths, 1,263 are considered “confirmed,” while 200 are categorized as “probable,” according to the data. A death is classified as “probable” if the decedent was a city resident who had no known positive laboratory test for the coronavirus, but the death certificate lists “COVID-19” or an equivalent as a cause of death.

And while coronavirus infections had spiked after the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, less than 300 new cases were reported here in a 24-hour period for the third straight day. As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, 1,424 borough residents are believed to have died from complications related to the coronavirus.
