Loyalty or loyal opposition? Democrats test fealty to Biden in special elections Henry J. Gomez © Provided by NBC News
CLEVELAND Nina Turner, the perpetual public face of Sen. Bernie Sanders unsuccessful presidential campaigns, once compared voting for Joe Biden to eating a bowl of fecal matter.
Now Turner is a top contender for Congress. And her Democratic opponents hope to differentiate themselves by embracing President Joe Biden, who was elected thanks to the overwhelming support of Black voters like those in Ohio s 11th District, which Turner hopes to represent.
The race is one of several this year that illustrate a division that persists in the Democratic Party: the allies of a president who practices centrist politics against a progressive flank that wants to push him to the left with proposals like Medicare for All, the Green New Deal and a $15-an-hour minimum wage.

HB-nixed: With little fanfare, Gov. Mike DeWine on Wednesday signed House Bill 128, which repeals the cornerstone of the scandal-ridden House Bill 6: a $1 billion-plus bailout of two Northern Ohio nuclear power plants. As Jeremy Pelzer reports, HB128 also repeals an HB6 “decoupling” provision that allows FirstEnergy Corp. to collect a comparatively high amount of money from customers, as well as a separate measure making it easier for FirstEnergy to pass state limits on significantly excessive profits.
Return policy: FirstEnergy says that, as a result of HB128, it will refund $26 million to customers collected under its “decoupling” policy. As Pelzer explains, the Akron-based utility said it will work with state regulators to determine how much money each customer will get, along with how and when they will get it.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson is endorsing Nina Turner in the race to succeed Marcia Fudge in Congress, Turner’s campaign said in a news release Wednesday.
“She is battle tested and uniquely qualified to represent us in Washington – not just in her experience but in her commitment to the people,” Jackson said in the release. “I know Nina and have worked and served with her on many complex issues that positively impacted Cleveland residents, including greater educational and training opportunities for our children, new business development and safe housing for seniors.”
Jackson and Turner have a long political history. Turner was elected to Cleveland City Council in 2005, the same year Jackson won his first term as mayor. In 2012, as a state senator, she cosponsored the legislation that enabled the mayor’s school transformation plan.
