Richmond filmmaker readies to release one film and shoot the next

By Mike Kinney and Kathy Chouteau You could say that Richmond resident and independent filmmaker, Jayson Johnson, is a triple threat: he not only directs his films, but also writes and produces them to boot. The owner of Strike Five Films recently sat down with the Standard to tell us about his latest passion projects a film he just wrapped up called “T.H.O.T?” and a screenplay for another film he plans to shoot right here in his home city. According to Johnson, T.H.O.T?, which stands for “That Hoe Over There,” tells the tale of a young man named Kev who is excited to go on a date with Stacy, until terrible rumors about her past force him to make a decision: Is Stacy really a T.H.O.T? Or is it all just talk? Adrian Marcel, a Grammy-nominated vocalist from Oakland, plays the lead role.

Think US Evangelicals Are Dying Out? Well, Define Evangelicalism …

I think there are a number of things to unpack here as religious belief/identity is notoriously difficult to define, just ask any atheist jew or catholic. My amateur sociological assessment of much US society is that church membership has always functioned as the glue that held relatively ‘new’ communities together. Sunday church is where everyone meets up and gets to know each other. A Chicago born friend of mine talked about having moved to the Deep South for work and having neighbours turn up on his door in the first week asking about his church affiliation. He first thought they were trying to proselytise and was pretty offended, then he realised they were simply asking if he wanted to make the effort to be part of the community, so despite being non-religious he went with the flow and found that they were wonderful neighbours.

Decatur art exhibit builds a world with Legos

DECATUR — Art and creativity can be found in various forms, including in a traditional children’s toy. The displays represent the creativity that happens in different ways and with a variety of different materials. With more than 10 builders, the exhibit will feature 3D and 2D Lego creations in various sizes, including tabletop displays and an 11-foot castle. The configurations are created from original designs and commercial kits. Organizers of the exhibit discussed a concept of creativity in non fine art ways. “We wondered about new ways we could inspire people to explore their creative sides,” said Jami Fawley, Decatur Area Arts Council Gallery Coordinator.
