South-East govs should make Ebube Agu work

THE recent launch of a region-wide security outfit by the five South-Eastern state governors represents a ray of light in a zone spiralling into the dark tunnel of insecurity. The joint security and vigilante network, codenamed
Ebube Agu, is expected to “fight and flush out criminals and terrorists from the zone” with the state governments working with all stakeholders to restore peace to the geopolitical region. Though rather late in conception, the governors need to work quickly and extra hard to secure popular buy-in, establish the initiative on a sound legal footing and ensure its effectiveness.

OHANAEZE Ndigbo has raised alarm over the alleged massive arrest of Igbo youths by the Nigerian army and taken to unknown destinations.
Ohanaeze said the mass arrest is going on in Ohaji and Oguta Communities of Imo State by military personnel believed to be from 34 Artillery Brigade, Owerri.
The arrested youths were alleged to be members of Eastern Security Network, ESN, according to the apex Igbo group.
Ohanaeze wondered why the army were arresting Igbo youths who bear no arms and allow Fulani herdsmen to move around with AK 47 riffles.

Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi on Thursday said some criminals are committing crimes under the guise of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the South-East.
The governor made the comment during an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme Sunrise Daily.
“The truth of what is happening is that there are bandits everywhere; there are cultists everywhere. What happens now in the South-East is that criminals who may not necessarily be members of IPOB and ESN, will go and commit crimes and they need a name.

GOING by indications, it would seem that the Federal Government has finally risen to its patriotic obligation to root out the people funnelling illicit funds to the various terror networks undermining the security of Nigerians.
This is the 12th year since Boko Haram spun out of control in Borno State after its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was extrajudicially killed in Police custody. Since then, a ragtag band of Islamist agitators has morphed into a monster occupying the top two spots in the Global Terrorism Index in recent years.
To worsen matters, Boko Haram splinter groups have brought the defeated Islamic State groups in Syria and Iraq to North East Nigeria, thwarting all efforts being made to end our war against terror. In fact, more terror groups, particularly the so-called bandits and armed herders have seized many states in the North West, North Central, South East, South-South and South West.
