Celebrating A Century of NCAA Track & Field Championships
Wheeler Won An All-Time 400H Classic
Quentin Wheeler thought he was out of the competition early in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1976 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
Mike Shine of Penn State, running a lane inside of Wheeler, made up the stagger by the third hurdle, when Wheeler almost fell down. Down the backstretch, Southern California’s Tom Andrews was also challenging for the lead.
“About the seventh hurdle I could see myself beside Mike Shine and I thought, ‘Quentin, if you want it, you’re going to have to go out there and get it’,” he told Jon Hendershott of Track & Field News. “So I just put everything I had into it and ran.”
