Columnist As I write this column, we are in that strange no-man’s land between Christmas and the New Year. There is always such a terrific buildup to Christmas, and then it is just–gone. We are left standing in a pile of ribbon and debris, tired, a piece of fruitcake in our hand. Come on, fruit cake is an acquired taste, just try it. The birth of Baby New Year 2021 will be welcomed and celebrated with great joy the world over. We always have expectations for the upcoming year, many of them overblown or unrealistic, but the young 2021 carries an even greater burden of hopes and fears than most.

Americans were still nursing hangovers from New Year's Eve when 2020 got off on the wrong foot with apocalyptic brush fires ravaging Australia. Newspapers were filled with stories about a "blast furnace," "catastrophic fires," the "Armageddon," "dystopian wasteland," the deaths of "hundreds of millions of animals," and the frantic efforts to make mittens for koalas with burned paws.   OK. Rough start. But the rest of 2020 can only get better, right?

So when I heard about the club that went canoeing every New Year's Eve, I said Joe we have to join that club. Puck Acuff was telling us why she and her husband were camping beside the Current River in the Missouri Ozarks on a sub-zero night Dec. 31, 1961. The Ozark Wilderness Waterways Club (OWWC) had launched about 10 canoes on the river two days ago. Many large and small springs kept the river from freezing. Here's her story: When our toes got cold, we just hung our feet over the canoe gunnels, and let the 55 degree water warm our feet. Waterproof boots, of course. This evening we had climbed the hill behind our campsite to visit Bat Cave. Thousands of bats sleeping there. Carpeting the walls and stalactites with their furry bodies.
