Breaking News | Again, petrol tanker explodes in Agatu, houses razed

By Peter Duru, Makurdi Barely 48 hours after a truck laden with petrol exploded at Oshigbudu in Agatu Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue state which claimed 12 lives and razed about 100 houses, cars and motorcycles, another petrol laden tanker early Tuesday exploded in the same community. Though no casualty was recorded in the second incident, several houses were reportedly destroyed in the explosion. The Agatu Counsel Secretary, Sunday Oteyi and indigene of Oshigbudu who confirmed the accident, said it occurred at about 4am some metres away from where the earlier explosion took place. He explained that a major disaster was averted when residents fled the area shortly before the explosion occurred.

He said that drivers, especially the Muslim ones, who were observing the Ramadan fasting, should pull over in a safe area along the expressway if they felt tired. The FRSC official noted that pulling over to rest would help them to gain more strength to drive and reduce accidents associated with fatigue.

In a statement issued on the heels of tanker explosion that rocked the Oshigbudu community in the Agatu Local Government Area of the state on Sunday, the sector commander said the non-usage of safety valves to guard against spillage when tankers were involved in crashes lead to spillage and the attendant destruction. He warned petroleum tanker owners against the non-usage of safety valves. According to the statement signed by the command’s Public Education Officer, Oladele Meshach, the sector commander called on all petroleum tanker owners to ensure the immediate installation of safety valves on their tankers to ensure safety of lives, property and the products that the vehicles convey.
