Finding space in academia as a South Asian

Photo:  “Sometimes I feel like I fell into this job.” Thashika Pillay, assistant professor in the Faculty of Education, didn’t go into grad school planning to become an academic. Rather, the supportive community of senior PhD students around her, other BIPOC scholars, and mentors opened her eyes to the possibility of a career in academia. “I know without BIPOC scholars talking to me about the possibility of doing a PhD, I wouldn’t have done it.” Shobhana Xavier, professor in the Religious Studies School, also didn’t see herself as an academic until she became one. Growing up, she had never considered academia as a possible career and didn’t personally know any academics. She’s excited about her position as someone who can make academia seem more accessible for current students.

What it s like being a Castle Kid

Credit:  Katie Bell Back in 2018, I went out on a limb and accepted an offer to do my first year of undergrad at the Queen’s Bader International Study Centre (BISC), located in East Sussex, England, where students go to school at Herstmonceux Castle. I took a plane to London in August, and that’s when it finally hit me: I was a 17-year-old about to live in a foreign country for a year without knowing anyone. Looking back, it was the best experience of my life. When I first arrived, I was in awe of the Castle. It was everything I’d imagined. It had a drawbridge, a moat, and the gardens were amazing. It felt like I was living in a fairy tale.

AMS winter referendum statements

AMS Executive Candidates Hello Queen s, We are Team RTZ and we are vying for your vote to be elected as the Executive for the Alma Mater Society. Respectively, we have worked in various branches of student involvement since the beginning of our time at Queen’s. With our vast experience, we believe we have what it takes to significantly improve the Alma Mater Society.   We are honest, and we promise to speak candidly to you. Unlike many candidates in the past, our motives for running as Executive of the AMS stem from shared frustration over the inaction of the AMS this year. Over the past few years, student government at Queen’s has faced many challenges. Although we have many students to thank for leading us throughout the years, persistent failures and issues prevail within the Alma Mater Society.

Queen s meets enrolment targets with 26,309 total students

Photo:  Despite risks posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Queen’s is meeting enrolment targets. In the 2020-21 academic year, 26,309 students enrolled at Queen’s: 19,480 undergraduate students, 3,392 graduate students, 1,516 second degree students, 1,369 Smith MBA and graduate professional students, and 552 post-graduate medicine students. The total shows an increase from the 2019-20 academic year, in which 25,260 total students enrolled: 18,367 undergraduate students, 3,313 graduate students, 1,650 second degree students, 1,391 Smith MBA and graduate professional students, and 539 post-graduate medicine students. However, this year’s total also includes 3,576 total international students, which is a 7.8 per cent decrease from last year’s 3,877. The University attributes this decrease in international enrolment to the pandemic.
