The Newton Police Department is continuing to seek the public’s assistance in investigating a shooting into an occupied dwelling. On May 13, at approximately 10:45 p.m., an unknown suspect or suspects discharged a firearm into a residence on South Caldwell Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers found a woman inside the house with a life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported by EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center before being flown to Atrium Health in Charlotte. Additional occupants of the house, one adult female and three small children, were all uninjured. Investigators processed the scene and collected evidence.
Investigators believe that someone passing through the area during this time may have noticed a vehicle or someone suspicious. As of this afternoon (May 17), the injured occupant of the residence remained in critical but stable condition at Atrium Health in Charlotte.

The daily COVID-19 case count in Forsyth County continues to stabilize at an elevated level, while there has been another coronavirus-related local death.
According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there were 64 cases reported for Forsyth on Friday.
The average daily case count in Forsyth has been at 67 over the past two weeks. Thatâs up from 45 in the previous two-week period, according to Forsyth health director Joshua Swift.
DHHS lists COVID-19 cases and deaths on the day they are confirmed by medical providers and public-health officials so people may have been infected or have died days before their cases were counted.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services released their daily update involving COVID-19 cases within the state.
As of Friday, there are now 830,332 PCR positive cases and 139,420 antigen positive cases, 1,101 people hospitalized and 12,651 COVID-19 related deaths.
That is 2,231 new total COVID-19 cases and 20 additional deaths from Thursday.
A total of 12,413,011 total COVID-19 tests have been completed in North Carolina.
According to the NCDHHS, Friday s count is slightly inflated due to tests performed at Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) between January 6th and April 26th, 2021 that had not been previously reported to NCDHHS.
