Pembroke, N.C. Purnell Swett High School rising senior Chandra Locklear loves to play softball for her high school and her travel team. She s on the ball field somewhere five and six weeks at a time. There was one time she went 12 weeks straight she gave up her whole summer, said her father, Royce Cummings.
Locklear takes refuge on a softball field. It s her place of comfort. But it s also the site of the 17-year-old s deepest trauma.

A 7-year-old girl was killed in an early morning wreck in Fayetteville on Thursday, police said.
Perfection Simek, 7, of the 1700 block of Eldridge Street, was pronounced dead at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center following the 1:53 a.m. wreck at the intersection of NC 87 and Eastern Boulevard, a news release from the Fayetteville Police Department said.,
Perfection was a passenger in a 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Cartrice Coe, 42, also of Eldridge Street, when the Explorer ran off the road while entering the highway and apparently rolled multiple times, police said.
