Tanzanite: The World’s Rarest Gemstone
January 21, 2021
Since the gorgeously violet-blue gemstone tanzanite was first discovered in the 1960s, it has become a popular stone for various types of jewelry, from rings and pendants to earrings and brooches. There’s no doubt that this gemstone has become increasingly popular in recent years, but despite that, it’s actually the rarest gemstone on the planet. Indeed, in a few decades, there could be no more tanzanite left to mine. Given its scarce supply, you might assume that this stone sells at a high premium, but even though it’s exceptionally rare, it still sells for far less than diamonds.

Jewellery has been around, in its various avatars, since early human civilisation. We have always felt the need to adorn ourselves with nifty pieces. Over the years, jewellery evolved to encompass the intangible as it became expressions of love, display of social status and power, and a tool of investment and personal well-being (lucky stones).
RAPAPORT. Everledger has partnered with three major industry organizations to offer traceability for a 30-carat diamond from the Karowe mine in Botswana.
The technology company teamed up with India-based manufacturer Hari Krishna Exports, miner Lucara Diamond Corp., and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to share provenance details for the stone on its blockchain platform, the companies said last week.
Lucara, which owns Karowe, unearthed the diamond, which Hari Krishna subsequently cut and polished at its factory in Surat, India, and named it the Brilliant Lucara Diamond. The manufacturer’s customers in the retail sector will be able to view the stone through Everledger’s platform. The verified country of origin, Botswana, also appears on the platform via the stone’s GIA Diamond Origin Report, which confirms the provenance of polished goods by matching them to the original rough.
