He met people who are sleeping in trucks, abandoned buildings and even inside tree trunks. In the 46 years that Shilts spent as a college basketball coach at Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College, there’s no doubt he’s had sleepless nights before.

Drive-by shooting suspect tracked down and arrested after brief chase

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There was another drive-by shooting in Kalamazoo Thursday afternoon, but this time police have a suspect in custody. At approximately 1:00 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the report of gunfire in the 1900 block of South Burdick Street.  Witnesses provided a detailed description of a vehicle and the suspect involved as officers were converging on the area. A public safety officer responding to the call intercepted the suspect vehicle.  When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled. The vehicle was soon after abandoned by the suspect, who fled on foot.  Public safety officers gave chase, and the suspect was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.

Latravion Heard McMillon faces charges of felony murder and first degree child abuse. KDPS Captain Craig Habel says Jaylen Worthington died December 23 due to complications from trauma. On December 14, Worthington was admitted to Bronson Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Detectives were called to the hospital and began conducting an investigation. The investigation found the child’s injuries were a result of child abuse.

Armed robbery suspect in custody after money and property stolen from South Westnedge store

Kalamazoo, MI, USA / WKZO | Everything Kalamazoo | 590 AM · 106.9 FM Dec 30, 2020 4:42 AM KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A suspect police believe robbed a store on South Westnedge Tuesday evening is now in custody. Just after 6:00 p.m. Tuesday Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of South Westnedge Avenue for a report of an armed robbery.  They say the suspect entered the store and indicated a weapon.  The suspect then stole an undetermined amount of money and property from the store and then fled on foot. A police K9 was called to the scene, but the suspect was not located.
