COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The mask mandate in Columbus will be suspended effective Thursday, May 20.
Muscogee County is seeing a decline in COVID-19 cases. Over the last two weeks, the amount of COVID cases for the county dropped below 100 cases per 100,000 people.
The mask ordinance, established by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, offered cities like Columbus some protection to implement the mask mandate – as long as the case count remains over the 100 per 100,000 population ratio.

Ga. governor expands vaccine criteria for people 55+ and with high-risk health conditions By James Giles | March 10, 2021 at 10:06 PM EST - Updated March 10 at 10:49 PM
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - According to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, COVID-19 numbers are heading in the right direction in the state.
Vaccine efforts will begin to ramp up as Phase 1A is set to expand to people 55 and older and people 16 and older with high-risk health conditions. COVID-19 numbers such as confirmed cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are trending downward.
“People, not the government, would stop this virus. Today, that number is 1,523 patients, around 10 percent of our census. Our seven-day average of new cases is the lowest since early November and our percent positive test is at it’s lowest level since October,” said Kemp.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - As the pandemic continues, many renters are on the brink of eviction and the demand for rental assistance programs throughout the community is sky-rocketing.
Some new funding awarded to the state through the Federal Emergency Rental Assistance program could help alleviate some of the pressure though.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp says $552 million will be put aside and given to the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to distribute to landlords and community outreach programs that qualify.
