SA Senate converts nine graduate seats to at-large

More than 60 summer courses to include in-person, hybrid instruction

Media Credit: Diana Crompton | Photographer Koren Bedeau, the senior associate provost for special projects, said 475 students are currently enrolled in summer courses with in-person or hybrid elements, which will be taught by 77 faculty. About 61 courses will have in-person or hybrid elements in their instruction this summer, continuing the University’s “phased reopening” as COVID-19 cases drop and vaccination rates grow. Koren Bedeau, the senior associate provost for special projects, said summer classes will still operate with primarily virtual operations, but courses with either in-person or hybrid components will be taught in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, the Elliott School of International Affairs, the School of Business, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the School of Nursing.

Faculty Senate members say more representation needed among faculty

Media Credit: Danielle Towers | Assistant Photo Editor Wagner said the group identified issues with inconsistency in faculty recruiting, hiring and mentoring practices and expressed a need to cultivate a University-wide culture that prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion. Members of the Faculty Senate’s diversity, equity and inclusion subcommittee said increasing representation of underrepresented minority faculty remains a work in progress at a senate meeting Friday. Subcommittee members compiled baseline data on faculty composition, hiring, departures, promotions and tenure status from the past five years and found that GW’s share of URM faculty – which includes African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans – is insufficient. The group said officials need to streamline the University’s faculty hiring and recruitment processes while cultivating a wider diverse, equitable and inclusive culture among the GW community.
