Georgia receives $6.5M in grants for Law Enforcement Training program

ATLANTA, Ga. (WTXL) â During the 2020 legislative session, Governor Brian Kemp recommended and lawmakers approved the creation of a law enforcement training grant program through the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council for state and local law enforcement agencies.
On Wednesday it came to fruition.
Kemp announced the award of 63 grants in the amount of $6,756,389 for the Law Enforcement Training Grant Program Wednesday afternoon. We are committed to giving law enforcement officers across the state specialized training and resources needed to provide the best possible public safety to Georgiaâs citizens,â said Gov. An Augusta firefighter drowned over the weekend at Thurmond Lake, the fire department confirmed.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources game wardens were called around 5:45 p.m. Friday to the Lake Springs area due to a possible drowning. It was They determined a 60-year-old man went into the water from a boat and never resurfaced.
Georgia DNR crews searched until 11 p.m. Friday using sonar equipment and continued the search around 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Game wardens located the victim, Lt. Ralph Jenkins, with a side scan sonar at 9:39 a.m. and Columbia County divers recovered his body in 34 feet of water a short time later.

ALBANY – A Hudson man has been sentenced in federal court to 8 1/3 years in federal prison for aiding and abetting the theft of firearms from Zero Tolerance Manufacturing, a federally licensed firearms dealer in Ghent.
Austin Suarez, 26, was also sentenced to three years of post-release supervision.
Suarez pled guilty on January 11, 2021. As part of his plea, he admitted that on February 18, 2020, he and co-conspirator Duane Thompson agreed that Thompson would break into and steal firearms from Zero Tolerance Manufacturing.
Suarez aided Thompson in obtaining a pry bar and two-way radios to use during the burglary.

MARCELLON - Two Sheboygan teens were killed in a head-on collision with a semitrailer Wednesday evening in Columbia County.
The Columbia County Sheriff s Office responded to a call of a crash around 7:04 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of State 33 and Polinske Road in the town of Marcellon, just north of Pardeeville.
Deputies arrived on scene and found the teenage boys, ages 15 and 17, deceased, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The driver of the semitrailer sustained nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital, according to the sheriff s office.
The car was eastbound on State 33 and the semitrailer was westbound. The sheriff s office and the Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating the crash.
