Firefighters rescued people from apartments after a fire ignited in a building in northeastern Colorado Springs on Sunday afternoon, the Colorado Springs Fire Department said.
Crews rescued several residents from an apartment building at 4378 Montebello Drive using ladders. They did so because some residents were unable to exit the stairwell due to thick smoke rising from the second floor, firefighters said.
A unit on the second floor of the three-story building caught fire, but investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the blaze as of Sunday evening, firefighters said.
Flames and smoke blackened the walls of the unit that caught fire, and crews tore down drywall in the unit to search for hot spots.
