Comal ISD board OKs staffing, purchases, COVID stipends for all employees

Comal Independent School District trustees considered budget reports and approved hiring additional staffers for the 2021-22 school year during their workshop session Thursday. First, they approved one-time COVID-19 resource stipend of $300 for each full-time employee and $150 for all part-time employees at an approximate combined cost of $1,001,010.  David Andersen, district CFO, and Crystal Hermesch, executive director of school finance, reviewed 2020-21 financials and a presented a preliminary look at revenue and expenditures for the 2021-22 budget, which trustees are slated to approve June 24 to go into effect July 1. Trustees approved $775,370 for the final major purchases of furniture, fixtures and equipment for the new Pieper High School, opening in August at 810 Kinder Parkway in San Antonio. They also approved $243,143 for a CISD warehouse box truck and band trailers at Canyon Lake and Davenport high schools.

Comal ISD boosts middle school cleaning efforts after COVID uptick

Comal Independent School District said it has stepped up disinfectant treatments at Canyon Middle School after an uptick in COVID-19 cases at the campus. The 40 active and 217 symptomatic cases at the school, reported on Comal ISD’s COVID-19 page on Tuesday, account for nearly half of both totals, 86 and 394 respectively, throughout the district, which ended its mandatory mask mandate at facilities on March 10. “For the two week period between April 19 and May 4, there have been 48 students who have tested positive, most of whom have been asymptomatic,” said Steve Stanford, the district’s executive communications director, who said 238 students were quarantined after being exposed to those identified as lab-confirmed positive cases.

Comal adds 35 COVID cases, 27 recoveries, has 900 vaccine slots available for Thursday

Comal County s active case count moved slightly higher on Wednesday as health officials added 35 new cases and 27 recoveries from COVID-19. County officials also said there were 900 vaccination slots available for a clinic on Thursday. Those interested can register online for an appointment at www.mycomalcounty.com. The county s health department administers the Moderna vaccine which is approved for use in people 18 and older. The only vaccine approved for those who are 16 and 17 is the Pfizer vaccine that some other locations offer. According to Department of State Health Services figures, 62,742 have received at least one dose of the vaccine in Comal County, with 45,283 people, about 36.1% of the county s population 16 years or older, fully vaccinated.
