The Health Department reported the deaths of two youths undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, which took the overall toll to 722. The death of the two men aged 33 and 26 was attributed to acute respiratory distress syndrome and bilateral bronchopneumonia. A total of 6,943 were active cases in the district. As many as 70,745 person recovered so far, of which 1,107 were discharged on Friday. The district administration said on Friday that 682 beds were vacant in government hospitals, 791 beds were vacant in private hospitals and 1,159 beds were available at the seven COVID-19 care centres in the district. The two girls died on Thursday. According to the police, Tamilselvi (28) and her two daughters were admitted at the Palladam Government Hospital by family members on Wednesday evening. They were subsequently referred to the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital, where she allegedly told the doctors that she consumed rat poison and also made her two daughters to consume the poison, the police said. The mother and the younger daughter were then referred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Coimbatore: The district recorded a slight dip in Covid-19 cases, with only 996 people declared positive on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases past the 75,000-mark to 75,293. Though 745 people were discharged, the number of active cases inched closer to the 7,000-mark at 6,948. The district also recorded one death due to the virus, taking the toll to 717. The victim was a 29-year-old man, who suffered from obesity, and died three days after testing positive at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital due to bilateral bronchopneumonia and respiratory disease. Over the last one week, the number of cases the city corporation accounted has grown from 59% on Monday to 60.97% on Tuesday. Within the civic body, the north zone, which consists of Ganapathy, Kavundampalayam and surrounding area, reported the highest number of cases at 166. This included 888 cases reported in the Coimbatore Corporation limits which was an increase of 260 cases over Tuesday’s 628. The Health Department said that the district had 6,921 active cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday and 991 persons recovered from the disease. The district’s death toll increased to 719 after two persons died of COVID-19 on Tuesday. While a 62-year-old patient died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, a 33-year-old patient succumbed to the disease at a private hospital on Tuesday, according to the Department.
