Gretna vaccination clinic to close next week

GRETNA, Va. — After approximately two months of serving as a central vaccine hub for Pittsylvania County, the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic will be shut down after its last clinic May 20. A decline in demand for the vaccine combined with more widespread access across our county led to the decision to close the clinic.   We were very pleased with the role the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic played in providing so many of our residents the opportunity to get vaccinated, said Pittsylvania County Administrator David Smitherman. We think that the clinic served its purpose in making vaccinations, from scheduling the appointment to actually getting the shot, convenient for people in Pittsylvania County.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine distribution paused by CDC

Just after the region began dispensing Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 (J&J) vaccine at clinics, the CDC and the FDA recommended a pause in the use of the vaccine due to a small number of reports of blood clots. On April 13, the departments called for a pause on the vaccine’s use after a small number of “rare and severe” blood clots were reported in people, all women between the ages of 18 and 48, after receiving the J&J vaccine. These symptoms occurred six to 13 days after vaccination. As of April 13, nearly seven million doses had been administered nation-wide. As of April 13, the CDC reported that of the 189 million doses administered of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, “no reports matching those associated with the [J&J] vaccine have been received.”
