The CDC and FDA announced Friday evening that Johnson & Johnsonâs Jassen COVID-19 (J&J) vaccine could be administered again, following a thorough safety review.
The departments recommended a pause on the vaccineâs use on April 13 after six cases of ârare and severeâ blood clots were reported in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine.
According to the CDC, teams at the FDA and CDC examined data to assess the risk of âthrombosis involving the cerebral venous sinuses,â which are large blood vessels in the brain, as well as other sites in the body such as the abdomen and legs. They also looked at thrombocytopenia, or low blood platelet counts.Â

DANVILLE, Va – Local health leaders say restarting the Johnson and Johnson vaccine again could help with vaccine hesitancy.
On Friday, U.S. health officials lifted an 11-day pause on COVID-19 vaccinations using Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot, after scientific advisers decided its benefits outweigh a rare risk of blood clot.
Health districts like Pittsylvania Danville and Southside have had issues with transportation and broadband issues when it comes to distributing the vaccine.
Its health district director says the pause on the J&J could be causing people to be more hesitant about getting vaccinated.
Just after the region began dispensing Johnson & Johnsonâs Janssen COVID-19 (J&J) vaccine at clinics, the CDC and the FDA recommended a pause in the use of the vaccine due to a small number of reports of blood clots.
On April 13, the departments called for a pause on the vaccineâs use after a small number of ârare and severeâ blood clots were reported in people, all women between the ages of 18 and 48, after receiving the J&J vaccine. These symptoms occurred six to 13 days after vaccination. As of April 13, nearly seven million doses had been administered nation-wide.
As of April 13, the CDC reported that of the 189 million doses administered of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, âno reports matching those associated with the [J&J] vaccine have been received.â

DANVILLE, Va. â Following Gov. Ralph Northamâs announcement of three FEMA funded vaccine clinics last week, Danville opened theirs on Monday morning in the former JCPenney location at the Danville Mall.
The clinic, a collaborative effort between the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), the Virginia Department of Health and the City of Danville, will mass vaccinate not only Danville and Pittsylvania County residents, but citizens from all surrounding areas.Â
According to Mike Guzo, Virginia Department of Emergency Medicine Chief Regional Coordinator for region six, the space has the ability to serve 6,000 people in a day, but 2,000 vaccines were given on Monday by appointment only. The clinic ramped up to 3,000 beginning Tuesday.Â
