Covid-19 cements the importance of the car

1 person found this useful The company car market is predicted to grow significantly after new research reported a three-fold increase in drivers wanting to source their next vehicle through their employer. The findings, from the OC&C Speedo meter ‘Battery Late Than Never’ report, also suggest that Covid-19 has helped cement the importance of a car, despite people driving less. More than two-in-five drivers (42%) said the pandemic has increased their belief that a car is essential. It is not just drivers who see the car as essential either – the number of non-drivers who expect to own in the future has risen by 21% in the UK.

Carmakers respond to PiCG cut by reducing EV prices to beat new cap

1 person found this useful Carmakers have been rushing to cut electric vehicle (EV) prices, so they remain eligible for the plug-in car grant (PiCG). It means, for example, the Tesla Model 3, with prices starting from £42,500, and the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, which is priced from £40,295, will now not qualify for the incentive. However, Nissan, Vauxhall, Peugeot, BMW and Hyundai, which had electric cars priced just above the new £35,000 threshold, have reduced vehicle costs to remain eligible for the grant. Ford said the Government decision to cut the grant, meaning that the Mustang Mach-E now misses out, was disappointing. “Robust incentives - for both purchase and usage - that are consistent over time are essential if we are to encourage consumers to adopt new technologies, not just for all-electrics but other technologies too like PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) that pave the way to a zero-emissions future,” a Ford spokesman explained.

Global semiconductor shortage warning for fleets

Click the thumbs up >An emerging shortage of semiconductors risks disrupting global car and van production, fleets are being warned by the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP). The fleet training and trade body says that fleet decision-makers may need to adopt strategies to cope with longer lead times for vehicles if the disruption continues. The global semiconductor shortage, caused by a surge in demand during the pandemic for consumer electronics and a recent fire in a key supplier in Japan, is impacting on the ability of all automotive manufacturers to produce vehicles equipped with certain components, according to The Procurement Partnership.
