Firearms and drugs seized in Alfredton

Date Time Firearms and drugs seized in Alfredton Detectives from the Illicit Firearms Unit have seized guns and drugs during a Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) compliance search in Alfredton this morning. Police attended the Cedar Avenue address shortly after 8.30am this morning. Police located five firearms, including two handguns, a quantity of ammunition and drugs believed to be methylamphetamines. A 31-year-old Alfredton man will be charged with the following offences: • Possess traffickable quantity of firearms; • FPO subject possess firearm; • Prohibited person possess firearm; • Other associated offences. The man is expected to face an out of sessions remand hearing at Ballarat Magistrates’ Court tonight.

New Police Unit Targets Illegal Guns A new Victoria Police unit has been set up to prevent firearms getting into the wrong hands and protect communities from serious and organised crime. Dubbed the Illicit Firearms Unit (IFU), the new unit includes a team of 22 experienced investigators focussed on deterring and disrupting firearms related crime. Article continues below The unit will focus on investigating the manufacturing and trafficking of illicit firearms, and work to proactively stop this criminal activity in its tracks, including that linked to organised crime groups and gangs. Additionally, Victoria Police will continue to focus on the risk that illegal firearms pose in the community in relation to homicides, shootings, drugs and family violence.

New team to tackle illicit firearms offending

The IFU will expand on the work of previous firearms teams within Crime Command to provide specialist investigative response and intelligence gathering, as well as assisting with the targeted service and enforcement of Firearm Prohibition Orders across the state. They officially commenced in September 2020 and are comprised of a number of specialist detectives, led by Detective Inspector Mick Daly, as well as several intelligence analysts. The IFU will also work in close collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and other key stakeholders in the area of firearms licensing, regulation and legislation.
