New York Fashion Week is back for another season of shows but things have changed

When the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) chairman Tom Ford announced earlier this year that the organization would no longer publish an official New York Fashion Week schedule but rather an American Collections Calendar, the news confirmed something bigger than an administrative update.
New York Fashion Week was once the main stage for American designers, but this notion has been unbuckling for years as a number of designers have chosen to show elsewhere or outside of the official calendar dates.

New York Fashion Week, which has been renamed American Collections Calendar, is being held virtually today, and according to one analyst, the inclination to watch has significantly diminished.
For the fall 2021 season event, most designers will showcase their collections in lookbooks, presentations and on virtual runways over the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) platform.
The Analyst: There are a number of huge names in the fashion industry that investors will be watching closely for gains despite a virtual show without the air kisses and afterparties.
“I hate to be the angel of Fashion Week death here, but an abbreviated, quasi-virtual, socially-distanced New York Fashion Week almost seems like a quaint, antiquated notion,” Kristin Bentz, president KB Advisory Group LLC told Benzinga.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fashionistas will be turning to their screens to see the latest designer trends this fashion week as the traditional autumn/winter catwalk calendar kicks off virtually in New York on Sunday.
With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the usual celebrity-packed front rows, snapping street photographers and exclusive parties are gone, replaced with virtual or, in a very few cases, socially distanced shows.
Designers will show more than 100 pieces of content from their autumn/winter 2021-2022 collections in a film, live event or lookbook, said IMG, which runs New York Fashion Week: The Shows.
