Despite employees getting vaccinated, contractors will still require masks and social distancing on the job site.
Right now, the construction industry is tackling critical coronavirus vaccine issues: Should employees have the vaccine or not, and does it matter? Can an employer mandate employees be vaccinated before entering a job site? How can an employer successfully overcome vaccine hesitancy?
Deemed essential by the federal government, construction workers have been among priority groups for the coronavirus vaccine.
And professional organizations in the Construction Industry Safety Coalition (CISC) are strongly encouraging employees to get the vaccine. The coalition organized a campaign to urge vaccinations, establishing the COVID-19 Vaccine Awareness Week in mid-April.
As colleges and employers increasingly push for mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations, the question rises: Who’s on the hook for the rare, but inevitable bad side effects that go along with the shot?
Employers and institutions of higher education are both largely shielded against liability for vaccinations under a variety of state and federal laws. The Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness or PREP Act covers both vaccine manufacturers and the organizations that administer it, making them immune to state and federal lawsuits except for willful misconduct.
Schools and employers have slightly different exposures if they try to mandate vaccinations. Employers can exclude workers who pose a “direct threat” to the health of other employees and COVID-19 meets that definition. But the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission says employees can refuse vaccination for medical or religious reasons. Can you choose the COVID-19 vaccine you want?
A. Currently, only the larger health care systems – Hartford HealthCare and Yale New Haven Health Care – allow you to choose, hospital and state officials say.
In general, given scarce supply, state health officials advise only one vaccine may be available through your selected provider. You can talk with your medical provider if you have specific questions or concerns that may lead you to want to seek out one specific COVID-19 vaccine versus another.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health experts advise that everyone get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they become eligible, regardless of the manufacturer.

Florida vaccine supply to rise again with Moderna, Pfizer while next shipment of J&J uncertain
Continued increase in the Pfizer vaccine means Florida will once again see a jump in supply next week. The data released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday nearly 20,000 more doses of Pfizer over this week’s allotment. An equal number of second doses for each of the two vaccines has also been allotted, with first doses usually arriving from Monday-Wednesday each week. [Source: Orlando Sentinel]
