Animals fake death for long periods to escape predators: Study

Animals fake death for long periods to escape predators: Study ANI | Updated: Mar 03, 2021 10:34 IST Bristol [England], March 3 (ANI): A recent study by researchers from the University of Bristol has found that many animals fake death to try to escape their predators. with some individuals in prey species remaining motionless, if in danger, for extended lengths of time. The study was published today in the science journal Biology Letters. Charles Darwin recorded a beetle that remained stationary for 23 minutes - however, the University of Bristol has documented individual antlion larvae pretending to be dead for an astonishing 61 minutes. Of equal importance, the amount of time that an individual remains motionless is not only long but unpredictable. This means that a predator will be unable to predict when a potential prey item will move again, attract attention, and become a meal.

Study sheds light on correlation between allergy seasons, pollens

Study sheds light on correlation between allergy seasons, pollens ANI | Updated: Feb 28, 2021 16:03 IST Munich [Germany], February 28 (ANI): A recent study has shed light on how the length of allergy seasons in Germany are affected by pollens traveling far distances. Allergy sufferers are no strangers to problems with pollen. But now - due to climate change - the pollen season is lasting longer and starting earlier than ever before, meaning more days of itchy eyes and runny noses. Warmer temperatures cause flowers to bloom earlier, while higher CO2 levels cause more pollen to be produced. The effects of climate change on the pollen season have been studied at length, and according to some scientists, has grown by as much as 20 days in the past 30 years, at least in the US and Canada. But one important element is often overlooked - Pollen is meant to fly, said Dr Annette Menzel, Professor of ecoclimatology at the Technical University of Mun

Gut microbiome implicated in healthy aging, longevity

Washington [US], February 19 (ANI): The gut microbiome is an integral component of the body, but its importance in the human aging process is unclear. A team of researchers and their collaborators have identified distinct signatures in the gut microbiome that are associated with either healthy or unhealthy aging trajectories, which in turn predict survival in a population of older individuals.
