Study reveals psychosocial factors may drive peritoneal dialysis patient dropout ANI | Updated: Feb 20, 2021 08:13 IST Washington [US], February 20 (ANI): A retrospective study conducted by Louisiana State University Health New Orleans reported that contrary to previous research, most patients who drop out of peritoneal dialysis may do so for psychosocial reasons. The findings are published in The American Journal of the Medical Sciences . The research team evaluated the reasons that 27 of the 83 patients enrolled in the peritoneal dialysis program withdrew between 2016 and 2018. Twenty-four or 86 per cent were African American. They found that psychosocial factors, including mental health illness such as anxiety and depression, loss of support networks, or inability to tolerate the number of treatment sessions required by peritoneal dialysis, accounted for 63 per cent of the dropout rate due to controllable factors.

UK study sheds light on rise in hospital admissions for food-induced anaphylaxis

UK study sheds light on rise in hospital admissions for food-induced anaphylaxis ANI | Updated: Feb 18, 2021 08:07 IST London [UK], February 18 (ANI): The rate of hospital admissions in the UK due to a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) caused by food has more than tripled over a 20-year period. Despite this, the death rate from food-induced anaphylaxis halved over the same period, according to recent research. The novel research was published today in the journal BMJ. Food allergy is the commonest cause of potentially life-threatening allergic reactions, known as anaphylaxis. Substantial increases in hospital admissions due to food anaphylaxis have been reported globally, but it is unclear whether this trend is continuing, and if it is, whether this has led to an increase in fatal reactions.
