WESTERN SPRINGS, IL Western Springs weekly coronavirus rate was considerably higher than the state s in the last week.
As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,261 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 34 from a week earlier, or a 2.8 percent hike. That s higher than the statewide rate increase of 0.7 percent. Darien, with a population more than 50 percent larger than that of Western Springs, saw nine new coronavirus cases in the last week.
The week before, the village experienced a 0.3 percent increase.

LA GRANGE, IL La Grange saw a further drop in the rate of new coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department.
As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 2,220 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 19 from a week before, or a 0.9 percent increase. That was up from the previous week s 1.7 percent hike.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner s Office, the local number of recorded coronavirus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at 31. The latest death was Feb 13. All the local deaths have been those who were 61 or older, according to the medical examiner.

SCHAUMBURG, IL A 27-year-old Schaumburg died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash Thursday night in the northbound I-90 lane at Addison Street. Kevin S. Nitsch was pronounced dead at 12:16 a.m. Friday after being transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner s Office.
Police said Nitsch was traveling on his 2005 black Yamaha motorcycle at around 11:30 p.m. when he lost control for unknown reasons and struck another vehicle. He was ejected and came to rest in the left two lanes of the highway. The driver of the second vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene, according to a news release.
No one was in custody as of Monday afternoon, Hazel Crest police said.

A 12-year-old girl was fatally shot late Saturday night in south suburban Hazel Crest, village authorities said.
The shooting was reported at 10:05 p.m. at a residence on Arlington Lane. The victim, Erica Gibson, of Gresham, was taken to Advocate South Suburban Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, authorities said. Don t miss local breaking news and weather! Gibson sustained a gunshot wound to her head and died at 10:53 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner s Office.
