LA GRANGE, IL La Grange saw a further drop in the rate of new coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department.
As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 2,220 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 19 from a week before, or a 0.9 percent increase. That was up from the previous week s 1.7 percent hike.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner s Office, the local number of recorded coronavirus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at 31. The latest death was Feb 13. All the local deaths have been those who were 61 or older, according to the medical examiner.
Off-duty Chicago officer ejected in fatal rollover crash while fleeing police

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Police say an off-duty Chicago police officer was killed Monday morning when the SUV he was driving left a suburban Arlington Heights roadway, became airborne and crashed.
Arlington Heights police responded to the crash about 1 a.m. in the 600 block of South Reuter, according to a statement.
A preliminary investigation determined that the black 2021 Toyota 4Runner was traveling at a high-rate of speed, police say. An on-duty Rolling Meadows officer in a marked vehicle attempted to stop the SUV before it entered Arlington Heights, but the vehicle fled on northbound Wilke Road from Algonquin Road.

SCHAUMBURG, IL A 27-year-old Schaumburg died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash Thursday night in the northbound I-90 lane at Addison Street. Kevin S. Nitsch was pronounced dead at 12:16 a.m. Friday after being transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner s Office.
Police said Nitsch was traveling on his 2005 black Yamaha motorcycle at around 11:30 p.m. when he lost control for unknown reasons and struck another vehicle. He was ejected and came to rest in the left two lanes of the highway. The driver of the second vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene, according to a news release.

HOMEWOOD, IL Homewood Police say a 48-year-old man was found dead in an office building on the 900 block of 175th Street on Saturday. The discovery came after police were called to tend to a gunshot victim.
The man was identified on Tuesday as Robert James Jr., who was most recently a resident of Country Club Hills, according to police. The Cook County Medical Examiner s office ruled his death a homicide. The Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit, along with help from the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force said the attack wasn t a coincidence, adding that James was targeted.
No one was in custody as of Monday afternoon, Hazel Crest police said.

A 12-year-old girl was fatally shot late Saturday night in south suburban Hazel Crest, village authorities said.
The shooting was reported at 10:05 p.m. at a residence on Arlington Lane. The victim, Erica Gibson, of Gresham, was taken to Advocate South Suburban Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, authorities said. Don t miss local breaking news and weather! Gibson sustained a gunshot wound to her head and died at 10:53 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner s Office.
