Diaz defends junior-lightweight crown against Rakhimov Los Angeles (AFP) – American Joseph Diaz ends a year-long layoff by defending his International Boxing Federation junior-lightweight crown on Saturday against undefeated Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov of Tajikistan.
Diaz, a 28-year-old southpaw, makes his first bid to retain the title he took from compatriot Tevin Farmer in January 2020 by unanimous decision.
“It has been a great year-long layoff,” Diaz said. “I was able to witness the birth of my son and spend some time away from boxing. I was able to enjoy life as a normal person.
“But now I have this tough challenger ahead of me. We’ve taken this fight very seriously. We know what he’s capable of doing and we know he is a serious threat, but we know we’ll be able to adapt to anything.”
