Indian authorities raced Monday to evacuate hundreds of thousands from the coast as powerful Cyclone Tauktae roared toward landfall.
Tauktae, with maximum sustained winds that were equivalent to the strength of a Category 4 hurricane, was expected to make landfall late Monday in Gujarat state.
Already six people in southern India have died because of the storm. Four people were killed and 73 villages badly damaged on Sunday in the state of Karnataka, the Associated Press reported. Two people died in the state of Goa.

At least six people died over the weekend in torrential rains and winds as Cyclone Tauktae, according to press reports the biggest to hit western India in 30 years, swept over the Arabian Sea with Gujarat state in its sights.

An approaching storm may worsen the already devastating coronavirus crisis in India. The Indian Meteorological Department expects Cyclone Tauktae to make landfall in Gujarat state on Monday evening, which could lead to wind damage, flooding and a greater risk of coronavirus transmission in crowded evacuation shelters.
The South Asia head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Udaya Regmi, told the Associated Press that the cyclone is a terrible double blow to those already hit with COVID-19 infections and deaths.

NEW DELHI, Delhi A powerful cyclone roaring in the Arabian Sea was moving toward India s western coast on Monday as authorities tried to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people and suspended COVID-19 vaccinations in one state.
Cyclone Tauktae, which has already killed six people in parts of southern India, was expected to make landfall on Monday evening in Gujarat state with winds of up to 175 kilometers (109 miles) per hour, the India Meteorological Department said.
