No initial Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claims were filed due to the expiration of the CARES Act and federal unemployment benefits on Dec. 26. Any COVID-19 impacted worker that was receiving federal CARES Act unemployment assistance is not able to file or receive benefits since these programs were ended on December 26th, CDLE said.
CDLE said that any new programs authorized by the Continued Assistance Act will be implemented once federal guidance is received and systems are programed for the new benefits.
CDLE previously warned this process would take several weeks, and warned that the payment of federal benefits would likely not resume until late January or early February.

The number of Michiganders on long-term unemployment is declining, but those new to joblessness rose last week.
In the state, 29,033 filed new jobless claims for the week ending Jan. 2, a 46.5 percent increase from the 19,818 new claims the week prior.
The increase in new claims is possibly from workers hired ahead of the holiday shopping season who were laid off after the holidays concluded.
More than 200,000 were receiving unemployment insurance benefits from the state as of Dec. 26, an increase from 165,203 the week prior.
Throughout December, many Michiganders were coming off the federal Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, which covers benefits for an additional 13 weeks after an unemployed individual exhausts the state s 26-week program.
