Calorie counts on menus risk causing eating disorders and weight shaming, MPs have concluded.
The women and equalities select committee has published the findings of its inquiry into body image, urging the Government to scrap its current dangerous methods of tackling obesity.
The committee made a series of recommendations including commissioning an independent review of the obesity strategy because it is dangerous for people who have a negative body image and dropping plans for calorie labels on food in restaurants, cafes and takeaways as this could negatively affect those with, or at risk of developing, eating disorders .
THE Duke of Edinburgh has died, Buckingham Palace has confirmed, but some readers may not know he had a special link to Romsey. The news of his death was announced in a statement on Twitter by The Royal Family on behalf of the Queen. It said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” He was aged 99. After marrying the then Princess Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey on November 20 1947, the couple spent part of their honeymoon at Broadlands - the former home of The Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

BMI ‘triggers or makes eating disorders worse’
The government’s stance on addressing eating disorders and poor body image is “dangerous” and health professionals’ use of the Body Mass Index must be axed now, MPs say.
A report by the Women and Equalities Committee found the coronavirus crisis has had “devastating” repercussions for people who have or are at high risk of eating disorders as well as exacerbating body image anxieties.
Caroline Nokes, the committee’s chair, said BMI has turned into a “justification for weight shaming” and noted body image anxiety will be compounded by gyms and beauty salons reopening their doors on Monday as lockdown eases.
