Alec Couros says he was concerned, but not surprised, to see video surface on social media of what appears to be a Canadian Nationalist Party flag being waved at a so-called “freedom rally” in downtown Saskatoon over the weekend.
Couros, an expert in digital citizenship and social media at the University of Regina, says white nationalist and “freedom rally” groups often overlap in the social media channels they use, whether it’s Facebook forums or other websites. White supremacists and white nationalists have also been showing up at such protests in Canada and the United States.

Saskatoon city police say they will monitor a “freedom rally” planned for the Vimy Memorial site at Kiwanis Park on Sunday afternoon.
The rally, the fifth large freedom rally-branded event to take place in Saskatoon since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, will feature an appearance from People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier, who is scheduled to visit Regina, Saskatoon and Milden over the next three days on his “Mad Max Saskatchewan Tour.”

Regina man charged after allegedly emailing threats to Prime Minister s Office
An email detailing threats of damage to the Legislature building, the Court of Queen s Bench and harm to an out-of-province physician and retired judge resulted in a Regina man facing a global charge of uttering threats.

REGINA A 59-year-old Regina man has been charged with uttering threats after the Prime Minister’s office alerted the Regina Police Service (RPS) of an email allegedly containing threats. Regina police said Wednesday the Prime Minister’s office called to report an email received May 1 that allegedly contained threats of damage to the Saskatchewan Legislative Building and Queen’s Bench Court, as well as threated to the safety of a retired judge and out-of-province physician. RPS Major Crimes arrested 59-year-old Harold Christopher Charles Ringline on Wednesday afternoon. He is facing one charge of uttering threats. Ringline made his first appearance in provincial court on Thursday.

Saskatchewan has set a target to give every resident aged 12 and older the ability to queue up for their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
A schedule released by the Ministry of Health on Friday projects the age threshold, currently set at 35 and older for most of Saskatchewan, will gradually tumble down until everyone aged 12 and older is eligible for a shot on May 20.
