SJHL Virtual Showcase sees north young guns win Sask Milk Cup

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) wrapped up their Virtual Showcase on the weekend. Four teams comprised of some of the best players in the SJHL battled in a tournament for the Sask Milk Cup. Two teams featured players born in 2002 or later from the north and south teams, while the other two teams featured players born in 2001 and earlier from each group of teams. Team played two games to get seeded, and then played a semi final before the final game on Saturday afternoon. The Global Ag Risk Solutions team featuring the young guns from the north teams met the Sherwood team which featured the veterans from the north, and it was the youth that came out on top with an 8-7 overtime win giving Team Global Ag Risk Solutions the first ever Sask Milk Cup.

Mustangs asking City of Melfort to delay removing ice at Northern Lights Palace

Originally, the city had said they wanted to shut the rink down for the season as of Feb. 15, and an official decision would be voted on at the regular council meeting on Monday, Feb. 1. However, the Melfort Mustangs made a delegation on Monday, asking council to reconsider that decision and keep the ice in the palace for at least a few more weeks and wait on more information from the provincial government. As it stands, Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins said he is planning on bringing back some of his 18 and under players to begin practicing again and are hoping in the future to bring the rest of his team back all under the rules provided by Sask. SJHL concludes virtual showcase The SJHL held its virtual showcase over the weekend. The event saw players from the league inserted into the video game NHL 21. Games were then simulated and when the dust settled, the Global Ag Risk Solutions squad came out on top in the championship contest. “It was kind of a distraction for some people that miss junior hockey,” said Benny Walchuk, who is the radio broadcaster for the Melville Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers. “It was nice to hear some of those names that we’ve been accustomed to the first part of this year and the last couple years in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. It was good exposure – lots of hits on social media.”

The Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks were well represented on the four rosters with nine players from Melfort and eight from Nipawin over two teams that represent the province’s north teams. Mustangs second-year forward Ben Tkachuk is one of those players and he joined Jamie Neugebauer and Rory McGouran on SJ @ Noon on Monday, Jan. 25. “We’ll see if my virtual player decides to show up,” Tkachuk joked on the show. “But we’ll see what happens. I’m looking forward to watching.”
