Education initiative earns local public health nurse statewide award

CADILLAC — A little spousal encouragement resulted in a local nurse winning a statewide award. George Davis-Williams, the clinical supervisor for District Health Department No. 10 recently was recognized by the Michigan Public Health Association, receiving the Nursing Section Award for Public Health Nursing Practice after being nominated by Baker College. The college nominated Davis-Williams because of his efforts to make sure Baker nursing students who are assigned to study at the health department get a valuable experience. The assignments only last 32 hours, with six hours of it spent on public health orientation. Davis-Williams and the health department’s nursing staff try to make sure the rest of the time is spent on engaging work.

Volleyball Receiving Votes In Latest AVCA Poll

ABC 10/CW5 Courtesy: Northern Michigan University Athletics Courtesy: NMU MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball is receiving votes in the fourth American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) DII Coaches’ poll of the season. The Wildcats collected 38 votes in the AVCA poll. To be listed on the poll teams had to play in at least one match and be on two or more ballots. NMU most recently took on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Ferris State. The teams split the weekend series 1-1 with the Bulldogs taking match one 3-2 and the Wildcats winning the second 3-1. Women’s volleyball is back on the court this weekend as they take on Saginaw Valley State University at home on both Friday and Saturday. First serve on Friday is set for 4:30 p.m. inside of Vandament Arena, while Saturday’s contest will begin at 3:30 p.m.

(Courtesy photo) Richard Wilson was first inspired to write poetry during a trip he took to Europe shortly after leaving the U.S. Navy. Wilson, who served on a ship in the South China Sea during the Vietnam War, was 22 and alone on the trip. He remembers he felt a need to express the thoughts and emotions he felt as he visited places filled with history and culture. Since he had no traveling companion, he decided to express himself through poetry.

Cook currently works at Harbor Beach Community Hospital as a nurse practitioner, starting her medical career there in 2009 as a registered nurse. With that position, Cook worked in many of the hospital’s departments, like the emergency room, the intensive care unit, obstetrics, and medical-surgical, along with administrative duties. All the while Cook was working on her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, which she completed in 2014. She completed nurse practitioner school at Saginaw Valley State University in 2017.
