(Courtesy SDUHSD) Print On a week when high school cross country runners felt the joy and hope of a return to competition, the San Dieguito Union High School District found a new route toward getting students back to school. In addition to working toward an expanded reopening when San Diego County moves into the red tier, on Feb. 10 the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) released a new School Safety Review process that would permit school districts like San Dieguito to reopen if they were planning a phased reopening that was impacted by the new state guidance in January.

San Dieguito district forms senior events committee The class of 2020 had drive-through graduation ceremonies. (Courtesy) Print The class of 2021 has spent over half of their senior year away from school, missing out on all of the traditional and memorable experiences that come with the last year of high school. With the uncertainty of the pandemic over the next few months, many senior activities like prom, grad nights, trips, picnics and graduations are listed as TBD (to be determined). At the Feb. 1 San Dieguito Union High School District special meeting, SDUHSD President Mo Muir established a subcommittee on senior events planning, to make sure no student misses out on celebrating this less-than-normal but no less important year. Muir proposed that the committee include board members Michael Allman and Melisse Mossy, site principals and a parent from each high school campus.

Coronado reopens middle and high schools with San Diego County in purple tier

Print Coronado’s middle school and high school reopened for in-person instruction this week while San Diego County remains in the most restrictive coronavirus status. The California Teachers Association accused the Coronado Unified School District of opening the two schools unlawfully. State rules “explicitly prohibit” schools from opening during the purple tier, the union said in a cease-and-desist letter last week. San Diego County has been in the purple tier for about three months. County and district officials deny the district is breaking the rules. Advertisement State rules say that elementary schools cannot reopen until their county’s daily COVID-19 case rate falls below 25 cases per 100,000 residents. Middle and high schools must wait longer, until the county’s case rate falls below 7 per 100,000 which is also the threshold for leaving the purple tier.
