A decision in state Supreme Court is expected to be made in the next couple of weeks on who will be the next Democratic Election Commissioner for Chautauqua County.
On Monday morning, Hon. Lynn W. Keane, judge for the state Supreme Court Eighth Judicial District, heard arguments in the matter of Norm Green vs. County of Chautauqua in a special proceeding that was held virtually.
Attorney Sean Cooney represented Green, while attorney Stephen Abdella represented the county.
Green, who is the county chairman of the Democratic Party, seeks to prevent the county Legislature and its Democratic Caucus from appointing to the office of elections commissioner someone other than an individual recommended by the Chautauqua County Democratic Committee. Last month the legislature appointed Loren Kent to the position, even though he was not recommended by the committee.

ELLERY The town of Ellery wants a potential taxing district for Chautauqua Lake to be approved by the public.
Arden Johnson, Ellery town supervisor, sent a letter to Pierre Chagnon, R-Bemus Point and chairman of the Chautauqua County Legislature and other members of the Chautauqua Lake Protection and Remediation Agency asking for several changes to be considered before a taxing district for Chautauqua Lake is finalized.
“Require a referendum to be held, including all those who will be taxed,” Johnson wrote. “Enact CLPRA district taxation only if a majority of those to be taxed vote and a majority of those voting support the formation of the taxing district.”

Susan Parker is pictured submitting her primary petitions to the Chautauqua County Board of Elections.
In one more sign the county’s Democratic party is far from unified, a primary will take place in June regarding the District 4 seat for the Chautauqua County Legislature.
Susan Parker, a nurse, social worker and mother of three, has recently announced plans to run a campaign. “There are many people in our Pomfret community and in our county, who want progress and change in our county,” she said. “I want to make it my job to give voice to my community and help lead that progress and change.”
