CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - School districts around the Lowcountry are reacting to Governor Henry McMasterâs order that the requires districts to allow parents to opt-out of the schoolâs mask requirements.
Justin Farnsworth is a school board member in Dorchester School District 2. He says there were rumblings that an order was coming, but they were given no warning before the announcement was made.
âThe order that came out was, I donât want to say, a shocker but just something we were not fully ready for or expecting yesterday,â Farnsworth said.

In an emergency special-called Charleston County School District Board of Trustee meeting Wednesday afternoon, the board stated the district would comply with the governor’s executive order to allow parents and legal guardians to fill out a waiver from DHEC, permitting their children not to wear face coverings in our schools.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston County School District is taking another look at their face covering policy and ramping up student vaccinations.
During Monday’s committee of the whole meeting, district leaders gave the school board a COVID-19 update on infection rates and vaccination efforts.
So far, the district has been able to give 652 first doses of the Pfizer vaccine to students 16 and older at 11 schools through their medical partnerships. Officials say they hope to finish the doses this week before launching into second doses.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - Gov. Henry McMaster issued an executive order late Tuesday to allow parents to decide whether their children will wear face masks in the classroom.
The order comes as parents have demanded that school districts, including the Charleston County School District, drop face mask requirements for their children.
“We have known for months that our schools are some of the safest places when it comes to COVID-19,” McMaster said. “With every adult in our state having the opportunity to receive a vaccine, it goes against all logic to continue to force our children – especially our youngest children – to wear masks against their parents’ wishes.
