Chico City Councilmembers Alex Brown and Scott Huber held a press conference Tuesday in response to what Brown called a lack of evidence-based solutions to the city’s unhoused population.
Multiple disruptions occurred. Some female attendees and journalists felt provoked by male protestors. Car alarms drowned out the speakers, hecklers interrupted the councilmembers’ messages and some protestors tried to block those recording the event.
After the press conference, Brown responded to the disruptions.
“Councilmember Huber and myself did not foresee a need for security at this peaceful protest and rally, although anyone was invited to attend and hear what we had to say,” Brown said. “In hindsight, I wish we had.”

Lease agreement with CHAT and Town House Motel falling through

CHICO, Calif. - The Chico Housing Action Team also know as (CHAT) said its deal to lease a motel is falling through.
CHAT wanted to eventually purchase the Town House Motel located on 2231 Esplanade near the Miller Mansion.
In February, the Chico City Council approved CHAT to use $200,000 from the state to lease the property.
More affordable housing in Chico is on the way. The Chico Housing Action Team was granted nearly $300,000 to lease a property for non-congregate housing on Feb. 2. The grant will also benefit low-income and displaced students because Chico State Basic Needs has partnered with CHAT to help find affordable housing.
CHAT Executive Director Leslie Johnson said on Feb. 2 they hope to promptly purchase the Town House Motel. “It has about 30 rooms,” Johnson said. “The Torres Center currently booked 10 rooms for six more weeks, however 20 rooms are still available. After that period of time the rooms will be available to us.”
Co-Founder Robert Trausch said CHAT intends to use the Town House Motel for transitional housing while also constructing an additional 60 units for permanent housing.

The City of Chico has many plans in the works to get the homeless off the streets and into a shelter.

CHICO, Calif. - Across the street Marsh Junior High is where the city plans to build affordable housing for the homeless.
The Creekside Place Apartments would consist of 100 units. 15 of those units will be reserved for serving people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
“The campfire was horrible and devastating for everybody, but it has brought all these resources that we normally don’t see in our community, to be able to build this number of affordable housing units,” said Marie Demers, housing manager for the City of Chico.

The old BMX track is one of the options the city is looking at to shelter the homeless as well as partnering with the Chico Housing Action Team also known as CHAT.

CHICO, Calif. - The Chico City Council is moving forward with its plans to provide shelter for the homeless at the old BMX track, also known as the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds. Something needs to be done, said Chico resident, Jennifer Perry. Obviously, what is happening now isn t working for anyone and we need a safe place for them to be and the park isn t an option.
