DMARC, Proteus awarded Leadership Grants from Community Foundation Friday, May 7, 2021 9:48 AM The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines has awarded $100,000 to the Des Moines Area Religious Council and $50,000 to Proteus Inc. through Leadership Grants made possible by the Better Together Fund. According to a news release, Leadership Grants are centered on equity and serving populations disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The grant to DMARC will help support the relocation of its warehouses and headquarters to help it meet the growing need for food assistance in the community. The grant will allow DMARC to store and distribute increasing quantities of food and various personal products in the fight against poverty. The grant to Proteus will help the company in providing medical and behavioral health to agricultural families and workers by bringing mobile health care clinics to meat processing plants and offering follow-up care

Community Foundation sees record giving in 2020 as more people step up to meet critical needs BY MICHAEL CRUMB, Senior Staff Writer Thursday, February 11, 2021 10:39 AM The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines received $86.6 million in charitable giving in 2020, a record amount that helped it provide more than $70.1 million in grants to nonprofit organizations in Central Iowa. That level of giving an $8 million increase from 2019 was heartening to see, particularly because of the tough year so many people had in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, said Kristi Knous, foundation president. “I think it gives great hope, not just for recovery but resiliency of the wonderful community we live in,” she said. “It brings a bright light to the end of this tunnel for our nonprofit sector as well, to know our generous donors really did step up in such a meaningful way. The Santa Barbara Better Together Fund is one example of how community organizations came together to lend a hand to struggling small businesses. The fund has already donated more than $1 million to 150 small businesses. The fund, a partnership of Deckers Brands and the Santa Barbara Foundation, was created to “help small businesses thrive and prosper in times of turmoil,” said Tanner Begin, the fund’s public relations and marketing coordinator.
