HOWARD KURTZ, FOX NEWS HOST (on camera): The media have a new heroine and her name is Liz Cheney. If you cover the Bush administration as I did and remember the intense animosity that many journalists had toward Dick Cheney, especially over the Iraq war, it s kind of head-snapping to see the praise being hit on anyone with that last name.
The Wyoming congresswoman, like her dad, is very conservative and takes a hawkish line on foreign policy. But she is in rhetorical war with Donald Trump and thus is getting strange new respect from the press. Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney on Monday criticized the congressional members of his party who are seeking to remove Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney as their third highest-ranking House member.
Romney, a longtime target of former President Donald Trump and his most ardent GOP supporters, remarked Monday that expelling Liz Cheney from leadership won t gain the GOP one additional voter, but it will cost us quite a few. The former 2012 GOP presidential nominee rebuked the recent public remarks of the top two House GOP lawmakers, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise. Both GOP leaders last week endorsed the challenging bid of New York Republican Elise Stefanik to take over Cheney s third-position party role as House Republican Conference chair.
