West Seattle High-Rise Bridge clears major hurdle on road to repair

The Seattle Department of Transportation has selected construction firm Kraemer North America to complete the final phase of the West Seattle High-Rise Bridge repairs.
This selection of a contractor was the latest in a series of milestones in the effort to reopen the bridge on schedule in mid-2022.
The West Seattle High-Rise Bridge was closed in March 2020 after rapidly growing cracks were found in multiple locations. SDOT started working to stabilize the bridge. The emergency measures were completed by late 2020 and have stopped the cracks from growing larger, but additional work is needed to further strengthen the bridge and support the weight and stress of daily traffic.
The Seattle Department of Transportation yesterday announced it selected Kraemer North America to complete the final phase of repairs to the high rise span of the West Seattle Bridge. Kraemer performed emergency stabilization work on the bridge last year.
SDOT closed the high bridge early last year after inspectors found cracking issues. Kraemer then spent most of the year installing 10 miles of post-tensioned cables inside the concrete bridge’s hollow box girders and wrapping parts of the exterior with carbon fiber to stabilize it. Kraemer also replaced damaged bearings at the Pier 18 column. This emergency stabilization work cost about $20 million.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has selected the construction firm Kraemer North America to complete the final phase of West Seattle High-Rise Bridge repairs.
This selection of a contractor marks the latest move in the ongoing effort to safely reopen the bridge on schedule in mid-2022, the agency says.
The West Seattle High-Rise Bridge was closed to protect public safety in March 2020 after city engineers discovered rapidly growing cracks in multiple locations. SDOT immediately set to work on a stabilization effort by installing 10 miles of taut steel cable inside the bridge, repairing a bearing in the Pier 18 support structure, and wrapping the structure in carbon fiber in multiple locations.
