Pakistan, striving to maintain the growth momentum, suffered a setback last week when China stepped away from the virtual 10th Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting at the eleventh hour. The JCC meeting was projected to accelerate the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and boost industrialisation. Reacting sharply to the terrorist attack targeting Chinese nationals engaged at the 4,320-megawatt Dasu hydropower project in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, China pulled out of the JCC meeting. Pakistan and China were expected to sign a framework agreement for industrial cooperation, cementing the earlier signed memorandum of understanding (MOU). Besides exchanging notes on the issues of mutual interest, they intended to decide on a host of pending matters related to project implementation under CPEC. The high-powered meeting was to be jointly headed by Asad Umar, minister for planning and development, and He Lifeng, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission of China.

The important reason is that aquatic products enterprises in Pakistan have not realized the extreme importance of developing the huge potential of added value of aquatic products.

Hydropower push leaves Pakistani Kashmir s capital hot, bothered

By Roshan Din Shad MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan, July 16 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - On hot summer evenings, Khawaja Magbool Hadieri s family used to sit on their home s balcony and relish the cool breeze wafting off the nearby Neelum river. But these days, after 80% of the river s flow was diverted for hydropower, we re sweating while sitting there, even using an electric fan, Hadieri, 70, a resident of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir capital, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. As Pakistan seeks new sources of green energy, officials are diverting rivers through tunnels to harness clean hydropower. But the diversions are also causing a range of problems, from hotter urban temperatures to water shortages and sewage buildups in riverbeds once rushing with water.

China s already spending billions on overseas investments. Does it need to fund security, too? CNN 17 hrs ago By Nectar Gan, CNN © Stringer/AFP/Getty Images Rescue workers and onlookers gather around a wreck after a bus plunged into a ravine following an explosion in Pakistan on July 14. The death of nine Chinese workers in a bus explosion in Pakistan has underscored the security risks attached to China s overseas projects, as anti-China sentiment simmers in countries where official ties with Beijing are strong. The bus was carrying a convoy of Chinese engineers to the construction site of the Dasu hydropower plant in northern Pakistan when the blast occurred, killing 13 people.
