Why did Labour do so badly in the Hartlepool by-election?

The scores on the door: Jill Mortimer (Conservative): 51.9 per cent Paul Williams (Labour): 28.7 per cent  Sam Lee (Independent) 9.7 per cent John Prescott (Reform UK) 1.2 per cent Rachel Featherstone (Green) 1.2 per cent Andrew Hagon (Liberal Democrats) 1.2 per cent With the rest divided among independents who polled less than 1 per cent.  A thumping win for the Conservatives – but one that is difficult, with the results we have, to make precise and useful conclusions from. We can see from the handful of councils (largely, as I write, ones last fought before the referendum) that the Conservatives are gobbling up most of the Ukip/Brexit Party vote, as they have done at every election since the Brexit vote (with the vital exception of the 2019 local and European elections).

The winning member of the Senedd for Vale of Clwyd and full results

THE Conservatives have beaten Labour and clinched the Vale of Clwyd seat in the Senedd Election.  Gareth Davies (Welsh Conservative) took the victory with 10,792 votes. There were 366 votes between Conservatives and Labour following a recount. The seat has been held by Labour s Ann Jones since 1999. Mrs Jones said earlier this year that she would not be seeking re-election. Jason Mclellan was the Labour candidate for the Vale of Clwyd. He achieved 10,426 votes.  The  Journal were fortunate to secure the first interview with Mr Davies as newly elected member of the Senedd. Asked what the win meant to him, Mr Davies said: It means everything you know. I was selected in December 2018 and I wanted to run for my constituency which is my home. And I m pleased I have been given the opportunity and I thank the people of the Vale of Clwyd for putting their trust in me at the election.

Russell George keeps hold of Montgomeryshire seat

This is a hat-trick of wins for the Newtown resident who was first elected in 2011. He has also increased his majority from 3,339 to 7,528. Plaid Cymru candidate, Elwyn Vaughan took second place and Liberal Democrat hopeful Alison Alexander came third. Turnout for the constituency was 50 per cent, with 25, 134 votes being cast. Mr George, said: “It’s an absolute privilege to be returned as the Montgomeryshire member of the Senedd to represent my home constituency, where I was born and lived all my life. He thanked the Powys County Council staff for conduction the election count in a “very difficult situation”. Mr Russell also thanked his family and team for their support during the campaign as well as his fellow candidates who conducted a campaign that “focussed on policy.”
